"I don't believe in the cult of emo," states Sunday's Best drummer/vocalist Tom Ackerman flatly, "I wish I could shake every Jets to Brazil fan and tell them that Blake will not lead them out of the darkness and into the light. Ackerman, pausing only long enough to take a drag off of his Winston, re-sparks the debate, "you should write that Sunday's Best wants to lead the kids out of the malls and into the bars." While Benito and Ackerman continue to debate the merits of indie rock, I wonder aloud why lead singer/bassist Edward Reyes and second guitarist Ian Moreno seem conspicuously absent. This is, after all, supposed to be their band biography. Ackerman enlightens me; "Ed attends graduate school studying musicology. He tends to leave the rock platitudes to Pedro and I." And what about Moreno, I ask? "Lesson one about Ian Moreno," quips Benito, "is that he'll show up about five minutes after we're done."

Despite the band's refreshing quotability, the start of Sunday's Best is by no means uncommon. Moreno, Ackerman and Reyes met through their involvement with KXLU, Los Angeles' seminal college radio station, while Reyes and Benito had played in bands together around the Los Angeles area. Benito, Reyes, and Moreno (with Moreno on drums) recorded the original Sunday's Best 7" and a compilation track at Ackerman's ADAT studio. "After my last band broke up, I was going to school for recording arts and had resigned myself to becoming an engineer," Ackerman begins only to be interrupted by Benito, "When we were recording, I would ask Tom what he thought of the band. He was very candid in saying 'move Ian to guitar and get a really good drummer'. So one day we asked him to play with us and he never left."

I make my final mistake of the interview by asking Benito and Ackerman to describe their music; "Say we're a cross between Sunny Day and Radiohead. That'll have the kids from Hot Topics racing out to buy it", jokes Ackerman. Not to be outdone, Benito adds "say it's a cross between the Police and Foghat; it's 'Synchronicity' meets 'Slowride'".
